4 Random Thoughts, 1 Tool, and 1 Quote

Welcome to March! Almost a year since the world went into lockdown, and what a year it has been.  Obviously notable for the changes that we’ve endured to keep our communities safe, but also, for the amazing guests we’ve been able to have on in the meantime.

For our 150th episode, Ramzi looks back to remind us of some of the basics of sales engineering, taking bits of inspiration from the 149 previous shows and Ramzi’s own experiences.

Listen to Show 150 Here.

Getting to 150 episodes and even just being reminded of the basics of Sales Engineering really got me thinking about how quickly time can fly by when having fun and how important it is to reflect on what you’ve accomplished after any period of time, and so this is what the 4/1/1 is all about.

4 Random Thoughts From Me:

1- Stop and Smell the Roses.  It’s crazy how many amazing things can happen in the course of a year that can be forgotten.  Whether it be you presenting the best demo ever, you getting to meet a company you’ve always dreamed of talking to or just having a great conversation with a colleague.  Take the time to soak in these moments as they happen so that you get the most out of every moment of your career.

2- Look back at your accomplishments.  Some people keep tracking sheets, some people note their big achievements down in a notebook, others just remember them.  What’s most important though, is that you look back at all that you’ve accomplished after any period of time see how far you’ve come.

3- If you’re anything like me, you probably came into a new job pretty clueless and so wrote down a whole bunch of notes about everything when you started.  Once you’re much more tenured and comfortable in your role, look back at those notes.  You’ll be surprised at the insights you can find in the musings of a clueless “newbie”.

4- Semi-related to the above but remember all of the questions and challenges you had when you were new, so that when actual new colleagues start, you’ll be able to empathize with where they are such that you can develop them to where they need to be that much more effectively.

Speaking of looking back.  This is a great tool to be able to see the state of the internet on any given date.  Want to see what the headlines were a year ago, 10 years ago, on the day you were born? Just look it up!  Such an interesting way to get to see how far we’ve come (for better or worse) in any topic you’re interested in.
