4 Random Thoughts, 1 Tool, and 1 Quote

It’s always great to get Sales Engineer leaders onto the show to share their perspectives of what sales engineering is all about, and to peek into their brains to understand what they value in the people they work with.

This week’s guest, Russell Mohr, Head of North American Sales Engineering at MobileIron, is one such person who gave us that privilege of sharing his insights into sales engineering which made for a super informative show.

Candid conversations such as ours with Russell always gets you thinking about all sorts of things, and so just as it has been, this week’s 4/1/1 takes a lot of inspiration from the show.

4 Random Thoughts From Me:

1- Being open is often better than not.  A lot of people tend to keep their cards to themselves in fear of embarrassing themselves or wanting to avoid conflict in the moment.  However, if you’re open, you can show the jewels of your personality that can attract those who like what you think (or think the same way as you) towards you.  Also, being transparent now will help alleviate future issues that were brought on by deceit or misinterpretations.

2- Don’t be territorial. We’re all on the same team in the end, whether it be as a working group, a company, or humankind.  Help those outside of your domain if you can and support the rock stars on your team that want to move elsewhere.  By being supportive of those around you regardless of affiliation, you’ll find that you not only look good, but that it will come back around to help you in the end.

3- Always be looking past the horizon.  Where you are now isn’t where you’ll always be.  No matter what position you’re in, always have trust in your ability to push yourself forward to the next big goal.  You never know what skill you’ll pick up or person that you’ll meet next that will end up connecting you to your next opportunity.

4- Don’t neglect your own interests.  We talk a lot about professional resources that you can use to further yourself.  If you enjoy taking those in, great! But if you find that you’re sacrificing material that you actually enjoy trying to better yourself, you may be wasting your time, as passion towards those interests that you actually have is what will lead to a better, and happier you – something that others notice!

1 Tool:

Astronauts talk a lot about the perspective shift they experience when they first see our Earth from space.  Something about seeing our planet from that distance reminds them that everyone that they know and everyone that’s ever been, has come from that planet.

After being through so much in this past year, and while on the cusp of bringing in a new one, it can be helpful for us “regular” folk to get that same perspective to ground ourselves.

Check out the International Space Station’s live feed and tracker to get the view that you would if you were floating up in space.
