4 Random Thoughts, 1 Tool, and 1 Quote
This week we had Mike Shore join us again for the second time on the podcast. The last time he was on, he was an SE Manager at Oracle. I’ve had a few conversations with him and there was no indication that he was looking to get into sales. And yet, there it was, his announcement on Linkedin that he had started his role as a Sales Director and a smaller organization.
I thought he was crazy. Why would anyone do that? And then a few months later my role was shifted into a sales role and I hated it.
Talking to Mike, even though he had his fair share of issues, he enjoyed it. And I was choosing not to. And when I made the decision to embrace this opportunity, things got better for me.
Listen to my chat with Mike here.
Let’s dig into this a bit with the 4/1/1
4 Random Thoughts From Me:
1- Prepare for the next role. You can do that through reading, watching YouTube videos, talking to others, and starting to do the role.
2- Sometimes opportunities you always thought you didn’t want open up. This is a reminder that there are still opportunities. An opportunity by definition is “a set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something”. Be open to that something as it might be what you’ve always wanted and never known about it.
3- Sales gets a bad rep. But I’ve noticed that when I do “Sales” with a “Sales Engineering” mentality, I am a net positive to my customers. I’m still solving a problem but with a different tool kit than an SE.
4- And what’s the worst that could happen? Gain some experience, know if you like something or hate it, and then plan accordingly.
