Career paths for technical folks going into sales start usually with Sales Engineering and then Sales. Matt took a different route where he started off as a Salesperson and then moved to Sales Engineering. Here’s his story.
There are so many different paths to sales engineering. On show 94, my guest came from a very technical world. This time around, Matt, my guest, came from the Sales and customer success world.
Matt started his career with his current company as a Business Development Representative (BDR). Based on that, we discuss where the BDRs get their leads, cold calling, and how this helps him as a Sales Engineer.
After moving to customer success, Matt obtained a better understanding on how the customer actually uses the software which later benefited him when he switched to the Sales Engineering role..
We also took the opportunity to do some coaching. One of the questions that Matt had was if he should be some certifications to get better at his job. Also, how technical does an SE have to be in order to do the job?
This was a fun discussion with Matt. It wasn’t one sided so it was more like two friends talking which was great.
