4 Random Thoughts, 1 Tool, and 1 Quote

Welcome to May! Hopefully, wherever you are, you’re starting to get a taste of Spring, whether it be by being able to see grass again, or by having every jacket you own at the ready to account for crazy fluctuations in temperature, or perhaps by the songs of birds frequenting your neighborhood that you haven’t heard in months.  Speaking of tastes, this week we had a great guest, Neeraj Dhulekar, Founder of Snackwyze, to talk about his journey from engineering to product marketing, to becoming a founder.

Listen to our show with Neeraj here.

It’s cool hearing from people like Neeraj who have held a number of diverse roles that all relate to each other in one way or another.  As a result, well, also as per usual, our 4/1/1 will take some inspiration from this idea.

4 Random Thoughts From Me:

1- Power of transferable skills: I’m sure we’ve mentioned this before, but the transferable skills you gain through any experience are so valuable.  If you’re looking to change roles, even if it’s something completely different from what you’re doing now, chances are there are some skills you’ve picked up along the way that are really valuable for that new role you’re looking into.

2- The amount of “parallel roles” at companies. Depending on what you do, there are possibly other people in your organization that you’ve never talked shop (talk about work) with, but who may have a very similar role to your own.  If you can identify those people, you may surprise yourself with the level of insight you can get not only to what others in your company do but also potentially on how to be better in your role.  Examples of this include pre-sale vs. post-sale consultants and business dev reps sometimes have marketing equivalents as well.

3- Importance of emotional intelligence.  We’ve talked a lot about emotional intelligence on the show and in general but having Neeraj come on and talk about Product marketing really brought the idea to the forefront again.  You must be able to put yourself in the shoes of others to be a good product marketer.  Knowing what is going to appeal to one person or group versus another is important to ensure that you’re marketing your offering to the right target.

4- If you want to achieve something that you’re not able to for whatever reason, know that if you know what that reason is, and it’s addressable, then you’re halfway there already.  Do what you can to can to fill that gap and you’ll be where you wanted to be in due time.  If you’re worried about it being too late to start to get there though, check out this week’s quote.
