#285 Step-by-Step Process to Overcome the Job Market and Land Your Next Job

Notes:

Many individuals are looking for a job, and there are many common complaints. “No one is responding to me”, “I’m being ghosted” etc.

In this episode, Ramzi discussed his thoughts about the job search, some rules, and how you can go about securing your next job. This is true whether you’re looking to break into Sales Engineering, or you’ve been doing this for many years.

Some complaints:

1- no one is responding to my resume.

2- no one is talking to me

3- I have so many years of experience and now no one is talking to me.

Some thoughts:

Set your expectations:

1- It’s a tough market. You are competing against many people. Even if you’re great, if someone shows that they are better, or a better fit, or cheaper, or is available earlier, or one more person liked them, then you’d out.

2- Expect to be ghosted. If you expect it, you can prepare for it. Don’t do one interview at a time. – The interview process on it’s own takes months. So if you’re looking to change in a month, sales engineering is not for you.

Some rules:

1- Resumes don’t get you jobs, people do.

2- Every interview is a discovery call for you.

  • You can find out more about what they are looking for, why they are looking for it, and when they need it buy.

3- Every interview is a negotiation

  • Starting with the recruiter

4- You have to bring something to the table.

  • what is your value and why should they hire you?
  • experience, passion, technical skills, soft skills, knowledge,

Step by Step plan to get the job:

1- Meet as many people as possible:

  • Connect with as many people as you can on LinkedIn.
  • Find meetups in your area or near you are and attend.
  • Start your own meetup if you need to.

2- Get meetings

  • Pick their brains about their role,
  • Ask if they would refer you, to a job or to someone they think you should meet.
  • It will not always work, some would say no and you have to be respectful of that.
  • Make a positive impact. Ask how you can help them. If you know they are looking for someone in a specific area and you can help with, broker an intro.
  • End every call with the following question: Who in your network do you think it’s important for me to meet?

3- Get interviews:

  • From these meetings, you will get interviews.
  • get as many interviews as possible, don’t stop with the previous tasks. Keep talking to people,

4- Ace them:

  • Prepare for the interviews by preparing and practicing the questions
  • download freemiums and use them
  • watch youtube videos from the companies.
  • take notes and send follow up responses.
  • Negotiate a great salary.

5- Pay it forward:

  • Actually, don’t wait till you get here to pay it forward. Many people are willing to jump on a call with you, guide you, help you.
