4 Random Thoughts, 1 Tool, and 1 Quote

Everybody wants to do the big demo, manage the most important POC, or close the big home run deal, but that’s not what differentiates the stand-out SEs. What differentiates them is the small intangible things that they do, their character, and their willingness to learn.
That is something that Tanner and I talked about after the podcast. Managers are not the end all be all of information and decision. They are learning as well, and they can learn from the people who report to them.

Check out my discussion with Tanner here.

And if you are looking to switch jobs or to become an SE, then it’s necessary to do the little stuff to be seen and get that initial interview. We need to connect and help out when we can, volunteer, and do things that others may not want to do, like drive 5 hours to go to a meetup.

Let’s dig into this a bit with the 4/1/1

4 Random Thoughts From Me:

1- Do the little things (the intangibles) that nobody wants to do to stand out

2- that could be volunteering to help a manager or you could volunteer to help me with We the SEs  😉

3- Our manager’s job is to enable us to become our customer’s guides. But it’s our job to enable ourselves as well.

4- if you don’t want to spend nights any from family, friends, or hobbies to learn, then we need to get effective at our work so we can do that during work hours

1 Tool:

Speaking of being efficient, every morning I am asked by my journal “What would make today great?

I write down 3 things. The journal that I use is The Five-Minute Journal (affiliate link, thank you for your support). There are many others out there that might be cheaper, including a piece of paper, but I’ve enjoyed working with this journal over the last 3 months, and writing down those 3 things has helped me focus and understand what I need to do to achieve my goals.
