4 Random Thoughts, 1 Tool, and 1 Quote

This week’s podcast featured the duo of Steve Foster and Rob Curley, who were a successful SE/AE team for quite a time.  Seeing the dynamic between the two of them really painted the picture of how they were so successful working as a team.

This week’s 4/1/1 center around the idea of teamwork.

4 Random Thoughts From Me:

1- Respect.  Everybody wants it, but it doesn’t come free.  Just as people have to earn your respect, you need to earn theirs.  Once mutual respect exists though, then you can really flourish as a team.

2- Support.  Not everyone is perfect, I’m not perfect, you’re not perfect, and your teammates won’t be perfect either.  Now just cause we have shortcomings doesn’t mean those shortcomings define who we are or what we can do.  In fact, I’m pretty good at some things, I’m sure you are as well, and your teammates are really good at things too!  Use each other’s strengths to compensate for each other’s weaknesses and your team will be unstoppable.  Also, knowing that a teammate has your back is something that will allow you to perform even better yourself.

3- There’s no “I” in “team”.  This is similar to the above, but teamwork isn’t a single person activity.  The teams that really succeed are the ones that work with each other to bring a deal home.

4- Have fun.  Not everyone may agree with this, but the best teams in my experience are those that have a strong professional relationship, but also can unwind with each other as well.  Whether it be by closing the bar together to just chatting about a hobby or shared passion/interest that you both have, having a relationship that isn’t strictly professional can be helpful to strengthen the bond you share which will ultimately increase your worth as a team.

1 Tool:

Trello: As close as you are with your teammates, you won’t be able to succeed without good communication.  Especially for a lot of teams that need to collaborate virtually, communicating one’s progress on activities that their teammates depend on is especially important as hallway/kitchen/watercooler chats just aren’t a thing anymore. Trello is a great tool that can be used for free (with some limited functionality without upgrading to a paid version) to organize a team’s activities on a Kanban board that can be tailored to your needs so that everyone can be on the same page (literally too!).
