4 Random Thoughts, 1 Tool, and 1 Quote

Happy New Years everyone!

I hope all of you had a nice holiday season and are feeling (relatively) refreshed as we embark on the new year.  After the 2020 that we endured, many hope 2021 is their year to shine, and with the right effort, I think this week’s podcast guest Oscar Santolalla, author and host of the “Time to Shine” podcast would be inclined to agree with you.

Listen to our show with Oscar here.

Ushering in the new year with such an informative podcast is such a treat.  Public speaking is such an important skill in so many aspects of our lives, especially in sales engineering.  This week’s 4/1/1 explores some ideas that come to mind after listening to the show (and some other stuff too).

4 Random Thoughts From Me:

1- Public speaking and just being able to properly communicate with others is such an important skill.  Even if it’s not a natural one, practicing talking to yourself in various scenarios will ease the transition to those same scenarios in the “real world”.  Whether it in articulating the value of a product or persuading a group to your point of view, you can’t overstate the importance of being able to communicate effectively.

2- Be cognizant of the language proficiencies of your audience.  If you’re presenting to an audience in your first language who do not share that same first language as you, try to spend extra time to speak clearly (and maybe a bit slowly) to give your audience the best chance of understanding all that you have to say.

3- The nature of evolution and growth of an individual is so interesting, it seems to always be happening no matter how experienced you are.  There’s always something that you can be doing to be better at what you do, no matter what it is.

4- 2020 was a pretty good benchmark year! That is to say that with very little effort, it shouldn’t be too difficult to make 2021 a year to smash any activity records from what you did last year (for things to do outside of the house anyways).

Your Phone/Camera/Recorder

When it comes to public speaking, we’re often blind (or deaf) to our own mistakes.  Sometimes, something as simple as just listening to ourselves speak/present is all it takes to identify what to change and become better.
