4 Random Thoughts, 1 Tool, and 1 Quote

This last week, we had Patrick Pissang on our podcast, and I was on his LinkedIn Live. In either case, we talk about being a Social Sales Engineer, why, how, and the challenges that people might face.

The 4 thoughts that I want to share are around that, but before we get there, I’ve been getting several questions about Sales Engineers and Discovery, or how we can talk about Value when we’re brought in late in the game. So here’s a short video where I discuss my thoughts.

Now I’m ready to get to the 4/1/1!

4 Random Thoughts From Me:

1- Businesses are always working to brand themselves, make themselves known to the public so when the public needs their services, they know who to reach out to. Well, we are a business too. That’s why we should be out there making a name for ourselves, branding ourselves. That way when hiring managers need to hire someone, they know who to reach out to.

2- This also comes with making hard decisions. I’ve never seen a business that isn’t always trying to grow. You can tell by the fact that our quota always seems to increase, never decrease or stay the same. And if we’re a business, we should be doing the same, but I know Sales Engineers who have not asked for a raise in years. So I want to point out that for every year you don’t get a raise, you’re actually getting a pay cut.

3- To follow up on the previous note, there are 2 ways we’re getting a pay cut. One would be inflation, and the second would be by increasing the quota. If the quota for year one is 1M, and you hit it, you get your full earning. Quota increased to 1.5M, but you only hit 1M, you made the company the same amount as last year, but you got paid 66% of your commission

4- There are more aspects to consider while taking or staying at the job than money. Flexibility, equity, opportunity, etc. But being out there and known will simply give you options if you choose to move along, and not have to wait till you’re desperate and pissed off.

1 Tool:

I admit, it feels a bit ridiculous to tell everyone about LinkedIn since most people already know about it. What I’m trying to get is many people know about it, but don’t use it properly. They are browsers. I know I was for a very long time. But if you want to differentiate yourself, then you should really use it, but just consume from it. If you need help on how to use it, reply to this email and I’m happy to help you. You can also reach out to Patrick Pissang on this topic.

1 Quote:

“All of us need to understand the importance of branding. We are CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc. To be in business today, our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called You.”
