4 Random Thoughts, 1 Tool, and 1 Quote

Welcome to October! Where the weather gets cooler, the world gets spookier, and sales teams start their Q4 push to close the year strong (given the fiscal and calendar year is the same)!  To help with this push, this week’s podcast had on Joseph Fung, Co-Founder, and CEO of Uvaro, a career success platform to help people transition into tech sales, to talk about how pre-sales teams fit into an organization, particularly start-ups.

Listen to our show with Joseph here.

And for the weekly YouTube videos, Ramzi shares a story about working his salesperson at the time and why either side doesn’t know what the other is doing.

With so much great stuff talked about, let’s dive right into the 4/1/1!

4 Random Thoughts From Me:

1- Every situation is different.  When talking about when it makes sense for an organization to hire their first SE, every situation is different.  This whole idea can apply to just about anything.  Everything needs context, and what works in one place may not work in another.

2- Find what you’re passionate about in what you’re doing.  Joseph talks about how Founders will always have a level of passion for their company that can’t be matched easily.  So, if you’re not a founder at the company you work for, find what you’re passionate about in what you do, and you’ll find that good things come out of it.

3- Everyone has their style, find yours.  Whether it be in how you work, how you demo, how you dress, or anything really, while there are best practices for everything, there’s always room to add your own flavor to make it really special.

4- Empathy as an SE goes a long way.  It can come in handy in being a better teammate, leader, or just simply an SE.  Being able to really understand the issues being faced by prospects to be able to speak to how you can help them is a great skill set to have.  And similarly, understanding what your colleagues are going through to be able to better support them is a big plus as well.

1 Tool:

Public APIs

I’m starting to play more and more with APIs, and as I experiment with different calls, having sites that I can draw information from is pretty handy.  If you want to play with a bunch of public APIs, check out the above link!
