4 Random Thoughts, 1 Tool, and 1 Quote

We had a great guest this week by the name of Justin Ryburn. Justin worked for large companies throughout his career but recently moved to a Startup and he’s noticed some differences. We talk about these differences on the show.

Listen to our show with Justin here.

In the interview, Justin mentions how there is no one-size-fits-all for Sales Engineers. SEs in one company may do different things from SEs in others. But we talk about Sales Engineering like it’s the same everywhere and people would love it no matter what. That is not the case. Some people succeed in certain organizations, fail in others. Some people fail as SEs altogether but succeed in different roles. This video below discusses if Sales Engineering is even for you.

Now let’s get to the 4/1/1:

4 Random Thoughts From Me:

1- Different SEs require different skills at different companies

2- Like any role, just because you enjoyed Sales Engineering at one company, doesn’t mean you will enjoy it in another company.
3- Sometimes while working for big companies you are treated as a number. The VP of something decided they want to let 5 people go, they might not go after the lowest-performing. They would split this loss against 5 teams, each losing one person, and it doesn’t matter if that person or team is doing better than others.
4- You are a business. Treat yourself like that. Every year a business decides how much growth they are going to achieve, how much headcount, etc. You should be doing the same. This year I made X amount of money. Next year I want 10% growth. How can I achieve that? Ask for a raise or find a new job? Sell more and make more commission? Drive an uber? Start a side hustle? Maybe it’s not money you’re interested in. Maybe you want to take more vacation days, spend more time with the family. There are so many aspects of our lives that we just let happen to us that a business would never allow. When the time comes that your organization is treating you like a number, you have a plan to deal with it.

1 Tool:

BiggerPockets

This is not a tool necessarily, but if you’re looking to treat yourself like a business and you’re interested in real estate investing, this is the best place to learn about that topic.
