4 Random Thoughts, 1 Tool, and 1 Quote

The past year and a bit have presented a number of challenges for many.  Whether those challenges be health-related, family-related, job-related, or anything else, there’s no doubt that this year has been tough.  From employees losing their jobs to others looking for a change, something that’s going to come out of this pandemic (and already has for a while), is a large number of interviews taking place.  This week’s show featured just Ramzi and I as we discuss 10 uncommon mistakes many people make during interviews, so hopefully, you find it helpful.

Listen to our interview here.

Interviews are such an interesting thing.  They’re dreaded by many, but also are so necessary, and while I personally hate the whole job application process, I do tend to see interviews themselves in a positive light, so I’ll share some thoughts I have on them in this week’s 4/1/1.

4 Random Thoughts From Me:

1- Don’t get too discouraged if things don’t go super well during the interview process.  Every “no” gets you closer to your next yes!

2- Every interview is an experience to help you be even better in the next one, so be comfortable, and know that you’re just getting better every time.

3- Always try to have a couple of questions ready to go as it shows genuine interest on your part for the role you’re interviewing for.  If your “canned” question gets answered through the normal course of the interview and you can’t come up with anything else by the end of it, I personally mention explicitly that, “you actually answered my question about XYZ because I was wondering this and you said that, so thank you for that.” This shows that you did come in with questions, and the interviewer will probably like you even just a marginal bit more as they’ll feel a bit more accomplished knowing that they inadvertently answered your question.

4- This is a true random thought, but in the world of online interviews being the norm, I wonder how many (if not all) interviews had people be in…less than professional clothing from the waist down.  We’ll never know, but if you’re ever feeling nervous for your next virtual interview, just assume the interviewer isn’t wearing pants (what a dummy 😛 ) and hopefully that gives you a little leg up.

1 Tool:

Libby

On the way to your next interview, why not soak in a new book on the way.  Reading is a great way to expand one’s perspective, world view, and vocabulary; all things that come across very well in interviews.

Libby is a great resource to access thousands of ebooks and audiobooks from your local public library – for free!
