4 Random Thoughts, 1 Tool, and 1 Quote

Welcome to Summer! With the solstice just having passed, we’re right in the midst of some of the longest days in the year.  With such great weather comes along some great shows, and this week was no exception.  Peter Near, National Director of Solution Engineering at VMware came on the show to talk about task management, leadership, job satisfaction, and more.

Listen to our show with Peter here.

Getting to hear from someone of Peter’s caliber is always such a special treat.  The perspective people like Peter can share isn’t something that everyone holds and getting to tap into the wisdom he’s gained over the years is something that made it really easy to come up with this week’s 4/1/1.

4 Random Thoughts From Me:

1- The idea about Prioritizing being about knowing what to say no to.  Sales Engineers want to help, sometimes need to help, so we don’t want to say no. But at some point, we will have to choose who and when we can help. That’s when the skill of saying no comes into play. Also remember, every time you say yes, you are saying no to something, which is most likely your health.

2- The importance of building your internal network within your organization.  As versatile as SEs are, it’s not realistic to imagine that you’ll know every answer to every question you’re ever faced with.  The benefits of knowing others in your organization is great not only to defer questions to, but also to grow your perspective on how your company functions.

3- Your reputation is your reputation.  Not that of the company you work for as that can change whenever, but you will always be you.

4- Just do it. Nike hit a grand slam with its slogan.  It’s so true though, whether it be in athletics or in creating initiatives that only you as an SE can.  If you know it’ll provide value, then just do it, and ask for forgiveness later if you need to.  But more likely, you’ll be viewed in a very positive light for the initiative you show to make a positive difference.

1 Tool:

uBlock Origin

A lot of you may already have one, but a content blocker, particularly for ads is a great tool to have in your browser.  Whether it be to stop intrusive ads or prevent trackers from following your online movements, these types of tools are super handy to have.

uBlock Origin is a great free choice that hasn’t bowed down to any corporate overlords yet, so their filters haven’t been manipulated by deep pockets. Check it out!
