4 Random Thoughts, 1 Tool, and 1 Quote (April 15, 2020)

This weeks’ interview with is a Gary Sloper who up until recently was the Global Head of Sales Engineering and Customer Success at Oracle. In our chat, he was talking about the responsibility of the hiring manager to understand what the SE wants to achieve in their career and help them achieve that within the confines of the organization.

4 Random Thoughts:

1- Not every hiring manager cares about the future of their sales engineer being their sales engineer. So if you have a goal you want to achieve, then it’s up to you to let the hiring manager what you want. If they can help you, then they know what you want and potentially how to guide you.

2- This is not a once in a lifetime conversation. Managers have too many responsibilities both towards their SEs, their management team, and to the sales team as well. You have to remind them periodically so they can get back their focus and help you achieve your goals.

3- In many cases, the manager cannot really do anything to help you. In my previous job, there was no upward mobility in Canada. Unless you’re in Sales or Sales Engineer, you’d have to move to the US to get a different opportunity. If I had not had that discussion with my manager about my goals, I would not have known that. That helped me make the decision to move somewhere else.

4- This goes beyond your goals. If there is a technology you want to learn, it’s not someone else’s responsibility to send you to a course or train you. Most of the learning we do, it usually has to be outside of office hours, on our own dime with our own leadership.

1 Tool:

The We The SE Forum. The forum is available to you so you can start conversations, ask questions, and communicate with other people who share your passion for Sales Engineering.

More importantly, however, we’re going to be using the forum to start a No SE Left Behind Campain. This is a place where Sales Engineers who were effected by COVID to submit a video resume. A special shout out to Brian Anderson who already submitted his Live resume.
