4 Random Thoughts, 1 Tool, and 1 Quote

Sales Engineering is initially challenging, like any other role. But once we get the basics down, some might think that they know everything there is to know about sales engineering. I know I did. During my initial training, I did one presentation, got great feedback, and thought that my work was done. I then went on to learn bad habits and got into a rut.

Chris White had a different experience but also ended up in a rut.

Now the 4/1/1

4 Random Thoughts From Me:

1- The first step is to recognize we’re in a rut.

2- Ask for guidance. Whether it’s your boss, a mentor, or an external coach like Chris White did. My door is always open if you are looking for a coach. Hit the reply button and let me know if you’d like more info.

3- And I hate to break it to anyone, but Sales Engineering can sometimes be boring and we might want to switch things up – whether it’s moving to the dark side (i.e. sales), going back into a purely technical role, or switching organizations altogether.

4- Or simply take a vacation and reflect. It’s hard to evaluate your current standing when you’re in the middle of “the hurricane” – sometimes you just need to detach.

1 Tool:

This week’s YouTube video is about the back-end processes needed for Sales Engineering Teams. You might find this helpful in recognizing where things are going wrong (if they are) and ultimately identifying the root cause of the rut.

“Every year I try to grow as a player and not get stuck in a rut. I try to improve my game in every way possible. But that trait is not something I’ve worked on, it’s part of me.”
