4 Random Thoughts, 1 Tool, and 1 Quote

Welcome back to the last week of January!  Goodness time has been flying.  As we near closer to We The Sales Engineers’ 150th episode, it’s important to look back at how we’ve got here.  This week’s show gave us the opportunity to sit down with WTSE founder and driving force of the SEing community, Ramzi Marjaba, to talk about his experience as an SE, his methodologies, and the inspiration for starting We The Sales Engineers.

Listen to Ramzi’s Episode Here.

Getting to interview Ramzi to get his perspective is always a privilege as he’s done and seen quite a bit.  As a result, this week’s 4/1/1 takes from many of the ideas discussed on the show.

4 Random Thoughts From Me:

1- Just start it.  If you think something should exist and it doesn’t, and you’d like to learn more about it, then start it! Just like Ramzi’s need to learn more about sales engineering led him to start the show, which has resulted in him becoming a well-recognized SE leader.

2- Find your fit.  People are built differently, and different roles cater to different personality types.  If you’re not happy in your role and feel like every fiber of your being isn’t right for it, then look for something that fits you better, it’s definitely out there, just need to find it!

3- Looking back to move forward (better). They say not to look back to go forward, and I’ll admit, I can remember countless times back in school where if I bombed a test (felt I did very poorly just after writing it), I would hand it in, and move on with my life without trying to understand why it went so poorly.  A better way to go about it would be to fill those gaps in your understanding and find out how to answer the questions you couldn’t the first time, and then move on being that much smarter and more informed. That’s why athletes watch game tapes!

4- Respect everyone.  No matter what you see on the surface, there’s typically more going on than what meets the eye.  Whether it an informal encounter with someone who rubbed you the wrong way, or a professional one with a colleague whose job you think you can do better than them, there’s usually more happening than what meets the eye, so respect everyone.  It may come back to help you down the line.

1 Tool:

Nardwuar TEDx Talk – Do It Yourself!

This isn’t really much of a tool, but rather a Tedx talk that was given by a Canadian music interviewer named Nardwuar.  I personally have been binging his interviews while on quarantine as the human experiences he can achieve with the artists he interviews is something special.  But after interviewing Ramzi, I couldn’t help but be reminded of Nardwuar, who has achieved so much by simply just starting it himself.
