4 Random Thoughts, 1 Tool, and 1 Quote
The easiest moves are internal moves. So if you’re like our guest, James Conner McCann, and were in support, it’s easier to move to the Sales Engineering team in your company than outside it. Similarly, if you’re already an SE and want to move to Sales, Product Management, Marketing, etc, it’s always easier to move internally, if you have a good reputation!
You can hear my interview with James here.
And this week’s YouTube video is me reacting to other folks on YouTube explaining what Sales Engineering is. That was fun for me because as someone else is talking, I get to add my thoughts, flavors, and caveats about the role.
Now, let’s get to the 4/1/1
4 Random Thoughts From Me:
1- When applying to jobs and looking at job descriptions, know that these are more like a “wish list”. Some things are not negotiable, others are.
2- Being in a support role is great preparation for a Sales Engineering role.
3- One major issue to overcome while coming in from support is the rush to solve the technical problem, without thinking about the business problem.
4- I keep hearing from people who were 1 inch away from an offer only to find out that the position has been frozen. Know that you’re not alone. It’s happening to many SEs, experienced or otherwise.
1 Tool:
I’ve been using Miro for a year or so as my whiteboard. This is my go-to while working with customers and clients to explain complex ideas or for training.
Miro can be used in many other situations such as team collaboration, brainstorming, and project management. Note that I’ve not used it for anything other than a whiteboard!
