4 Random Thoughts, 1 Tool, and 1 Quote

Welcome to another week and another 4/1/1.  This week, we had on John Cook, Senior Marketing Manager at Consensus, to speak to the results found in the 2021 Sales Engineer Workload and Compensation Report, conducted by Consensus.

Listen to our show with John here.

It’s so cool to see representative data from the pre-sales community.  As awareness and importance of the vocation grow, it’s good to see what’s going on with our peers to gain an appreciation of the collective experience of being a pre-sales professional.  This week’s show, like most others, really got the brain going, and so here’s the 4/1/1:

4 Random Thoughts From Me:

1- It pays to know. Knowing about what to expect from a prospect call and knowing that they’re qualified will always lead to a better call.  And if you don’t know info before the call that you need to know, try to ask about during, as it will either get you closer to the close or save you from wasting your time in the future.

2- Stress can have its benefits, but it’s not always beneficial.  I’ve definitely done some of my best work with a fire lit under me, but it’s simply not sustainable.  Being in a constant state of stress will lead to mistakes, burnout, poor health, and is just overall not a good time.  Be sure to take measures to not be as stressed in work and life if you can.

3- Looking at the salary ranges of the report was pretty shocking as a relatively new SE for a SaaS product in Canada, but when I consider that a lot of the salaries come from a place where the cost of living is super expensive where comparable jobs in the area also pay competitively.  Additionally, I’m not an actual engineer, whereas a lot of SEs who are engineers can use the salary they would earn as an engineer as a metric to know if taking the job as an SE makes sense.

4- Marketing for SEs is getting better.  Hearing John talk about how he first thought Sales Engineering was essentially a sales development job, and now is heading one of the de facto publications on the vocation, is really cool to think about how far pre-sales has gone and continues to go in increasing its awareness to the world.

1 Tool:

Canva.

Canva is an amazing design tool that can be used by just about anyone.  Easily make engaging posters, templates, cards, banners and more, with Canva! I know Ramzi used it to create his DemoFest Presentation. This is the last week to use his code (df21marjaba) to register for free
